Multiple Sclerosis (MS) attacks myelinated axons in the central nervous system (CNS), destroying the myelin and the axons. There are approximately 400,000 people in the United States and million people worldwide with MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20‐50 years old. Though the etiology of MS is unknown, it is hypothesized that MS results when an environmental agent or event (. viral or bacterial infection, exposure to chemical) act in conjunction with a genetic predisposition to immune dysfunction. Risk factors for MS include gender (women 2‐3x increased risk), genetics, age, geography, and ethnic background.

In 1923 Vittorio Jano was lured from Fiat , partly thanks to the persuasion of a young Alfa racing driver named Enzo Ferrari , to replace Merosi as chief designer at Alfa Romeo. The first Alfa Romeo under Jano was the P2 Grand Prix car , which won Alfa Romeo the inaugural world championship for Grand Prix cars in 1925. For road cars Jano developed a series of small-to-medium-displacement 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder inline engines based on the P2 unit that established the architecture of the company's engines, with light alloy construction, hemispherical combustion chambers , centrally located plugs, two rows of overhead valves per cylinder bank and dual overhead cams. Jano's designs proved both reliable and powerful.

The Alfa Romeo Alfetta , produced in Arese , rolled off the line with a VM Motori engine under the bonnet in 1979, signaling VM's move to the OEM automotive market. The engines still retained some maritime features, such as individual heads for each cylinder - a design which made it easier to produce different cylinder configurations. [8]
